I've always had a hankering to stay at one of the Library Collection of hotels. Like the Library Hotel in New York City. Or the Hotel X in Toronto. Now, though? I could not in all good conscience stay there after learning how this luxury hotel is treating its workers - or in some cases former workers:

Hotel X recently changed its subcontracting arrangement, leaving 200 employees out of work and out of pocket for the hours they have already worked and severance pay to which they are entitled. In Ontario - unlike Quebec, for example - the new subcontractor can apparently wash its hands of any obligations its predecessor had to these mostly minimum-wage employees. And frankly, that stinks.
Even though some countries have their own specific date to mark Labour Day, the first of May has always been a kind of International Labour Day. So today, with so many people's work lives disrupted due to covid 19, I decided to direct this week's donation to the Workers Action Centre:

There will also be an online hootenanny, "Songs of Protest, Songs of Hope" beginning at 7PM this evening:

The large public sector unions, as well as CKCU community radio, are all involved in putting on this event.

Spare a thought as well for those taxi drivers still willing to shuttle people to do essential errands, even though Coventry Connections has apparently cancelled their insurance (meaning that the cabbies have to foot the bill themselves).

Spare a thought for tenants unable to pay their rent today or small-time landlords unable to afford basic upkeep of their buildings.

We shall overcome - some day!
