The Polestar planner that I use has a different quote each week. This week's quote is by David Byrne, musician & producer:

Music resonates in so many parts of the brain that we can't conceive of it being an isolated thing. It's whom you were with, how old you were, and what was happening that day.

So true. And especially true, I would argue, of a live musical performance. My summers are usually filled with live musical and dramatic performances. Tomorrow was to have been the start of Music and Beyond, and Chamberfest would have followed that. But this year, events of that nature have all been cancelled because of the pandemic.

But very close to home, in the park around the corner, a young man has recently been playing his bagpipes. I won't call it a concert or even a performance, since he seems if anything to avoid playing when there's actually anyone sitting or walking in the park. Nor is he kitted out in a kilt or any of what I think of as Scottish regalia - just basic 21st century student casual. He probably regards it merely as practising, but he sounds good to me!

He was out there again today when I headed out to collect our mail. Particularly at a time when there's very little in the way of live entertainment on offer, I find him a real day-brightener.
