Next to long term homes, group homes for those requiring some form of assisted living arrangement have probably seen the greatest impact from Covid. Some have reported outbreaks amongst residents or staff. Even more disturbing is the recent murder of Karen Gottschalk-Millar, a staff member at a Pathways home in Kemptville.

While physical distancing certainly is more feasible in group homes than it was at, say, the old Rideau Regional Centre in Smith's Falls, the fact remains that maintaining health and safety precautions poses unique challenges when it comes to people who may not fully grasp the concept. Allowing improved (though controlled) access for close friends and family members (the "nearest and dearest") would be a step in the right direction, as they can offer both practical help and considerable comfort for residents, who may feel helpless and abandoned during a pandemic. But better staffing levels and funding are vital as well.
