One of the downsides of the re-opening process is getting those doorstep spiels again. These days, we don't get encyclopedia sales-people - I might even be tempted by those! No more Fuller Brush dealers either. If it's not Jehovah's Witnesses, it's usually some sort of home improvement service they're selling. This time it was attic insulation and I was able to tell him quite truthfully that we have already had our insulation and attic hatch upgraded.

Consumer protection legislation has fortunately put an end to some of the more egregious tricks out there, like the one where they'd tell you they needed to see your heating bills for the last couple of months or the one where they'd tell you they wanted to give you a new hot water tank.

Girl Guide cookie season fell at the height (depth?) of the lockdown this year, so no one came to our door with those (although I understand Metro was selling them for a while). But that would have been an easy sale - as are chocolate bars or oranges for a school band trip or any of the neighbourhood kids (though there aren't very many) wanting me to sponsor them for a walk or run to raise money for a worthy cause.

The guy selling attic insulation was young, likely a student, and while I'm sympathetic to the plight of students trying to scrounge summer work during a pandemic, that sympathy doesn't quite extend to inviting him up to my loft to see the raccoon etchings. At least he took my polite refusal at face value: some of them can be very persistent! Maybe one of the neighbours will take pity on him.
