A number of significant people in my life, most of them women, have had heart issues. And just this week, I got word that a friend of mine had suffered a stroke. She remains in hospital and her recovery process is complicated by the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic and requirements for social distancing.
I particularly wanted to donate to an organization focused on women's heart health because past research studies have all too often been based mainly or exclusively on male patients. But heart disease in women is often characterized by different initial symptoms. Quick intervention is crucial with cardiac patients and if symptoms are not recognized for what they are, more damage occurs and recovery is much more arduous too.
There is also some evidence that heart disease and the Coronavirus may be interrelated. For some Covid-19 patients, the first indication of the illness is a stroke:
