Today Philanthropic Phridays celebrates a 21st birthday of sorts. Or maybe it's only its 20th, given the first one was actually the day it was "born". And today my contribution goes to Bronson Centre:

For many years this building was Immaculata High School, a Catholic girls' school. After it closed, it was repurposed as a nonprofit cultural centre. As indicated on its site:

"Bronson Centre provides an affordable home for non-profit organizations, individuals, and creatives, while at the same time providing an amplified entertainment experience for the Ottawa community."

It's no secret that people in the performing arts have seen major disruptions to their livelihoods since the pandemic lockdown began. While there's still a cultural presence online, it doesn't fully compensate for the live event, either from the viewpoint of the performers or their audience.

I've been to a few events there, but they have branched out considerably since their early days. Of particular interest to me is their Bronson Hub, formed in September 2019, with its focus on seniors and social isolation - something that is particularly relevant in a pandemic. Its mission:

"learn together, build relationships, create projects and work together to improve seniors' inclusion and reduce social isolation with an intergenerational and cross-cultural focus"
