Well, obviously what "modern" means to you depends on when you were born, in other words how old you are. For folks of my generation - certainly for Americans but also for us here in Canada - landmarks would likely include the moon walk and the assassinations of Martin Luther King and two Kennedys, the earlier of which happened 57 years ago today. And for one journalist at the Washington Post, there are strong ties between the John F. Kennedy assassination and what's happening now with the U.S. presidency, with The Donald still obstinately insisting that he's won a second term in office, if it weren't for all those fraudsters behind the mail-in balloting. Well, you know, I suspected there might be a little fraud and other nasty dealings behind Trump getting elected back in 2016... but that's water under the bridge now and besides, he was never OUR president, thank goodness!

So did all this business of conspiracy theories begin in 1963? Frankly I doubt it. What about McCarthyism and reds under the bed? And here in Canada, an awful lot of the kids I went to school with had parents and other relatives who made their living through Cold War types of activities. We had air raid drills too, where we would get into our outdoor clothing and huddle under our desks or along the corridors of... well, powerlessness, really. And then there's the Diefenbunker...

One thing's for sure, though. Conspiracy theorists will always be with us, perhaps in even greater numbers now that any fool can get a platform via social media!
