Mid-Pandemic Dreams
Jun. 20th, 2020 02:11 pmThis morning as I lay in bed see-sawing between sleepfulness and wakefulness, I had a series of dreams, of which I can remember bits and pieces. If there's any sort of common thread to them, it would be something like: Life as it used to be, but slightly askew.
In one, I was in a large room full of people I didn't know, sitting around here and there. Someone came up to me and gave me a sheet of paper which looked to be advertising for some kind of upcoming event (possibly a play or a movie) but it was all in German. He asked if I could translate it or tell him the gist of what it said. I kind of said I'd get back to him and he walked away again.
As I looked at it I knew some of the words but not enough to tell what it was really about. I deciphered what I could and looked around for the guy who had given it to me but couldn't see him anywhere. So then I walked around a bit and found a woman who seemed to be in charge of things and thought I would give it to her to pass along to the person who had asked me to translate it. She was sitting near a piano and on the music stand was a copy of The High Road of Song with its distinctive orange cover. I asked the woman, "Does EVERYONE have that book around the house?" I don't remember her answer or whether I actually gave her my sparsely translated sheet of paper because by then I had segued into the next dream. (Side note: We actually do have a battered copy of The High Road of Song. I think it was used in elementary school music classes in my brother's day and they let the kids keep them at the end of one school year because they were getting new songbooks for the following year. At any rate, my brother used to occasionally play tunes from that book, especially Santa Lucia. And today would be his birthday too.)
In the second dream, I was lying in a large bed along with my partner in what I thought was a hotel room. It had all the charm and generic decor of a typical modern hotel room anywhere in the world (that I've been to anyway). We were just thinking about getting up and starting our day and I asked (only in the dream, I think) what time we had to check out. And I got The Look. Because it turned out that we already WERE home. I guess maybe we were living in some sort of a condo or an old-age home?
Then in the third dream, we were between the two sets of doors at Loblaws. There was very little lighting but the store was open. We were just getting a cart and were planning to go in, when I said something like: wait a minute, are we BOTH allowed to go in at the same time? (Another side note: They have been saying since the pandemic started that only one member of a household at a time should shop. But in the dream scenario, people weren't wearing masks and aside from the low lighting, things looked pretty normal.)
Interestingly enough considering their slightly anxious overtones, these dreams occurred at the end of pretty much the best night's sleep I've enjoyed over the past week. Not sure what THAT means!
