Philanthropic Phridays no. 9: VON
May. 15th, 2020 01:38 pmSince this is National Nurses' Week and we are heading into the Victoria Day long weekend, I thought this would be an ideal time to contribute to the Victorian Order of Nurses:

That's no longer their official name - they are now simply VON, perhaps because they don't want to be seen as behind the times or somehow associated with 19th century medical practices or values.
And in fact they are definitely "with it" and very much needed during this pandemic. They look after people in their own homes, thereby reducing the load on hospitals, their staff and patients. Their clients remain in the safety and comfort of their own homes, where they are far less likely to be exposed to viruses and bacteria that might aggravate a possibly already compromised immune system.
My parents supported this charity and I too benefited from it as a new mother in the 1980s, when they provided pre- and post-natal visits.
Home care is not just a thing of the past. It's definitely the way of the future too. It's much more economical than hospitals and long-term care homes as well as being the option that most clients would prefer, when the specialized expertise, equipment and infrastructure of a hospital setting is not needed.
Dare we hope that after all this ends, we may see a resurgence in the number of family doctors who make house calls?
