Welcome to Philanthropic Phridays, Bloggschneider-Werke-Verzeichnis no. 2.

The livelihoods of musicians and those in the music industry (sound engineers, roadies, event planners, caterers, concession stand people, etc.) can be precarious at the best of times. In pandemic conditions, that precarity increases exponentially as live music performances get cancelled. So today's donation goes to the Unison Fund:

Many wonderful musicians grew up or made it big in the Ottawa area. On the folk circuit, think of Bruce Cockburn, Colleen Peterson, Lynn Miles, Lynne Hanson or Tammy Raybould. Rock stars The Staccatos (later the Five Man Electrical Band) played in more than a few high school gymnasia. In a classical or chamber music vein, think of Angela Hewitt, The Huggett kids or Julian Armour. And love him or hate him, is there any Ottawan who hasn't heard of Paul Anka? So many people in my family and circle of friends have been or are involved in music in some way so with this donation, I am putting my money where my heart is.

On the other hand, I do not myself make a living from music in any way, so I hope you will excuse this adaptation of a song (or a portion of it at least) from a musical with which many of you will be familiar:

Grrls in white dresses with candy-striped sashes,
Droplets that fall from my nose and eyelashes,
Silver-white mercury surging like springs,
These are a few of my favourite things (NOT!!)

When the bat bites, when bird flu stings, when I'm feeling ill,
I simply remember my favourite things and then I reach f-o-o-rrr ...
A pill.

Let the Gatineau Hills be alive... with the sound of music!
