Date: 2023-01-25 08:05 pm (UTC)Reason the first: Covid. Covid is definitely a more immediate health threat than drinking, but Health Canada is not screaming at everyone to improve indoor air quality, wear N95s or better, or avoid large gatherings. Therefore, I roll my eyes at this nothingburger of a story. Yeah, we know drinking too much is bad for you. So are a lot of things.
Reason the second: Alcohol and tobacco have both been around a long time, in some areas since the dawn of humanity. In fact, it's theorized that beer was a contributing factor to why we have civilization in the first place (which, you know, might be a reason why it's harmful).
But tobacco use has changed massively over the course of human history, from something that was really only consumed during ceremony for many Indigenous groups, to cigarettes, which were designed and mass marketed to be consumed as frequently as possible. Alcohol consumption hasn't really changed all that much. Certainly, for some people it is extremely dangerous, and I don't want to downplay the ill effects, but for most people it's not really a problem.
My own drinking is 2 beers a week, max. So I don't really have a dog in this race, I'm just annoyed.
