As to your other point: certainly alcohol CAN be toxic in a number of circumstances and no one should feel obliged to consume it. But as a treat, as a way to relax after a stressful day, as something that tastes good and is a great accompaniment to a nice meal ... I see nothing wrong with that. No, bodies don't need it although I'm betting that at least before modern-day sanitation, it was safer to drink ale than water!
